The Celluloid Social Club - monthly screenings featuring the best in independent provocative short and feature films and videos followed by fun & frolic.
PURPOSE
The goal of The Celluloid Social Club is to provide a forum for filmmakers to share their completed films with an audience and through Q&A and a social setting gain feedback on their work. It also gives audience members an opportunity to view films that they might not otherwise be able to see as well as interact with the filmmakers. The event is also an opportunity to network and possibly find cast, crew and collaborators for upcoming productions. The event is also a location for leading filmmakers visiting Vancouver to share their films and experience with a local audience.
ORIGINS
The Celluloid Social Club has been running roughly once a month since November 1997. The event grew out of the Vancouver boom in the film industry and resulting increased indigenous production of local films without an outlet for an audience to view them.
PEOPLE
The Celluloid Social Club is produced by film, television and theatre producer Paul Armstrong. Feature film credits include Producer on Moving Malcolm by Benjamin Ratner starring Elizabeth Berkley (Showgirls); Executive Producer on See Grace Fly and Co-Producer on Ill-Fated starring Peter Outerbridge (Kissed). Short film credits include Mon amour, mon parapluie and Break a Leg, Rosie by Tara Hungerford. In the past six years he has Produced fourteen plays.
The Club is co-produced by writer/director (Rousing Doug, Cultural Differences) and producer (Superstitions, Taming Tammy) Aaron Houston.
The Club is hosted by writer (Rolling Stone Magazine, GQ) and filmmaker (Good Times, William Shatner Lent Me His Hairpiece) Ken Hegan. Ken is currently on hiatus. Rotating Guest Hosts TBA.
VENUE
The screenings are held at the casual and unpretentious ANZA Club in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Audience members are seated cabaret style and are able to drink during the show. This all allows for an informal atmosphere enhancing the social aspect of the club.
FORMAT
The show starts at 8:00 PM and usually lasts 1 ½ to 2 hours. Each film is followed by a short interview with the filmmaker by the host followed by an audience Q&A. Films are projected on a digital video projector on DVD, VHS or mini-DV.
